Rachel Whiteread paradox | everyday ethereal

Rachel Whiteread paradox
Everyday, ethereal & often monumental

Ghost, Rachel Whitread’s first major sculpture, so graphically set the direction of the work that followed and that she continues to make. Sometimes ethereal, often monumental inside-out versions of anything from everyday domestic items and building elements to less easy to compute memorial installations.

It’s all here at the Tate, occupying several spaces and moving from hot water bottle to staircase without blinking, always with a sense of something ghostly slipping by, mind-tricking and in the same glance utterly familiar.

Ghost in the Rooms beautifully revealing film on the artist and the obstructive art world she inhabits.
